Describe your publication
What you cover, who reads you and how they subscribe or send a tip. Cactal writes the pages, sets up your sections and tip form and publishes the site.
How it works
1 Pick a design
Browse by what you publish and open any design to see it full size.
2 Add your publication's details
Your sections, your writers, how readers subscribe and how to reach the newsroom. Cactal writes every page and builds the site from your design.
3 Publish
Ask for changes in plain words until it's right, then publish free on a Cactal domain, or on your own domain with Pro.
What a news or magazine website needs
A front page that shows what's new
Lead with the story that matters most today, then the latest ones in order. Readers come back to see what changed, so date every story.
Sections readers recognize
Sort stories into a handful of clear sections, such as local news, politics, culture or food, and keep the same menu on every page.
Bylines, dates and updates
Show who wrote each story, when it was published and when it last changed. Readers trust what they can check, and search engines read those details too.
A newsletter signup that's easy to find
Many readers come back through email. Put a short signup near the top and at the end of stories, linked to the newsletter service you already use.
A clear way to support the work
Say plainly how readers can subscribe, become a member or donate, and link to the service you already use for it. A tip form lets sources reach the newsroom.
An about page with your standards
Who you are, who funds you, how you choose stories and how you correct mistakes. New readers look for it before they trust a publication they don't know.
Questions
Are these news and magazine website templates free?
Every design here is free to start from. You can sign up, build and publish on a Cactal domain without a card and with no time limit. Putting your site on a domain you own is $25 a month on Pro, or $240 a year.
Do I need to know how to code or design?
No. Describe your publication in plain words and Cactal builds, edits and publishes the site. When you want a change, ask for it the same way.
How much does a news or magazine website cost?
A custom build from a web design agency often runs into the thousands of dollars and takes weeks. A builder template costs less, but you still write and fill in every page. With Cactal it's free to build and publish on a Cactal address, and your own domain is $25 a month on Pro, or $240 a year, with no setup fee.
Can I use my own domain?
Yes. Every site starts on a free Cactal address. Connect a domain you own on Pro for $25 a month, or $240 a year, and each additional website on its own domain is $20 a month.
Who owns the website?
You do. Every Cactal site is real React source code, so you can take it and run it anywhere. There is no export to buy.
Are these real newspapers and magazines?
No. Each design is an illustration made by Cactal, and the publication names, writers, people, stories and photos in it are fictional. Your site is built around your own publication.
Can readers pay, subscribe or log in on my site?
Cactal doesn't include payments, paywalls, memberships or reader logins. Your site can link to or embed the subscription, membership or newsletter service you already use, or the shop where you sell print issues, and a tip form can sit on any page.
Can I publish new stories myself?
Yes. Stories and pages live in a built-in CMS, so you can post a story, change what leads the front page or update a section yourself. You can also ask Cactal for the change in plain words.
